Eugene Maguire
The Sky’s the Limit
For Eugene Maguire, life is about constantly learning. Born in Dublin, Eugene moved to Vancouver in 1986 when he got a job at Vancouver General Hospital, working in the operating room until his retirement in March 2021. Life in BC, with the mountains and the sea and nature, was a perfect fit for him, as was his role in the OR. “Sometimes it could be routine and sometimes it could be quite scary, but it was always interesting. I loved the work and kept on learning throughout my career.”
Retirement has given Eugene more time to pursue his many interests. “I’ve always liked guitar. I’m always trying to get better at it, and it’s become a very good friend to me,” he says. His love of music took him on a recent trip to Nashville and Memphis. He also teaches flight simulation at a centre in West Vancouver, which the seniors there have great fun trying to master.
Eugene has been a supporter of Knowledge Network for more than two decades. He enjoys science and history documentaries and, of course, anything to do with music, like the documentary about Indigenous guitar great Link Wray (Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World). He appreciates the fact that Knowledge acquires shows from countries around the world, such as Michael Portillo’s train documentaries and international dramas that aren’t available on commercial television stations.
“I liked Knowledge when I first saw it and I’m still a fan today,” he says. “I’m getting to see programs that I think are really high quality and I’m happy to pay for that. I’ll continue to donate and I hope that Knowledge continues to give us great programming for many years to come.”
